At Dempsey's 18 month check-up Dr Miyamoto suggested we start potty
training. He told me we should start by familiarizing Dempsey with
what the potty is and have him start sitting on it periodically for 5
minutes at a time.
I thought this was a crazy idea seeing that Dempsey is only 19 months
old right now. It just seems so early. Nevertheless, I got the
training potty out and set it up in the bathroom. Dempsey has been
showing intrigue with the toilets and their movable seats anyhow.
I sat him on his potty a few days ago for maybe 2 minutes. He took to
it well. Nothing happened. No surprise there. Off he got and into the
bath he went.
Tonight I decided I would encourage him on the potty again. I started
running his bath water, stripped him down, and sat him on his potty. I
remembered hearing about a prank involving sleeping people and a glass
of warm water. I thought "if it works for sleeping people perhaps it
works for awake little people too". As Dempsey sat on the potty I
filled a small cup with warm water. I then urged him to put his hand
in the warm water and play with it. Before I knew it he was still and
focused.
When he signed "all done" I helped him off the potty. What do you
know- there was pee in there!! I made a big ol' happy deal about it
with high-fives and clapping and even called Daddy in to share in his
achievement. And then... pictures. Yes, I photographed the elements
that went into tonights success. Here they are for your viewing
pleasure.
HOORAY DEMPSEY!!
The warm water.
